LaTonya N. Shelton, LCSW, RYT, TCYM

Life can feel heavy at times, especially when you are used to being the one others depend on. Many of the women who find their way to my practice are high-functioning, capable, and deeply caring — yet quietly carrying anxiety, exhaustion, trauma, or emotional pain that others may not see.
You may have spent years holding everything together for your family, your work, or your community. Over time, that strength can begin to feel overwhelming. You might find yourself feeling anxious, emotionally drained, disconnected from your body, or unsure how to ask for support. Therapy can become a place where you no longer have to carry all of that alone.
My approach to therapy is compassionate, thoughtful, and collaborative. I work from a strengths-based perspective, which means we build upon the resilience, wisdom, and skills you already possess. Healing often begins with deep listening, honest reflection, and creating a safe space where your experiences can be explored without judgment.
Because emotional healing does not exist apart from the body, my work also integrates mind–body awareness. As a Registered Yoga Teacher and Trauma-Conscious Yoga practitioner, I value practices that help calm the nervous system and reconnect you with a sense of steadiness and presence. Together we work toward restoring balance — mentally, emotionally, and physically.
I have a particular passion for supporting women who are used to being the “strong one,” including many African American women who carry cultural expectations of strength, responsibility, and resilience. Therapy can become a space where you do not have to perform strength, explain your experiences, or minimize what you have been carrying.
Who I Work Best With
I work especially well with women who:
- feel emotionally exhausted from carrying responsibilities for everyone else
- experience anxiety, irritability, or feeling constantly on edge
- are navigating trauma, painful past experiences, or long-standing emotional wounds
- struggle with emotional eating or body image changes
- are navigating midlife transitions and shifting roles
- want culturally attuned care and a therapist who understands the pressure of being “the strong one”
Therapy is not about fixing you — because you are not broken. It is about creating a grounded and supportive space where you can begin to release what you have been carrying, reconnect with yourself, and move toward a life that feels calmer, clearer, and more aligned.
Healing is possible. And you do not have to do it alone.
